iPod Linux has seen a pretty significant update lately:
Quote:
A release version of the 2.4.24 kernel is now available for download! This version includes full support for first, second and third generation iPods (no iPod mini support) including audio, firewire and remote.
The other important inclusion with this release is the demo podzilla program. Podzilla is a basic GUI demo similar to the native Apple firmware, it has a very simple mp3 player which can be run by running the file browser and selecting a .mp3 file, during playback the pause/play button will pause and menu will exit back to podzilla.
In March 1923, in an interview with The New York Times, British mountaineer George Leigh Mallory was asked why he wanted to climb Mount Everest and replied, "Because it's there."
In addition to that, there is the future potential for more feature rich firmware than Apple. For example, ogg and flac support, basic visualisers, support for displaying long text and HTML files... the list goes on.
Be nice if you could put phone numbers and names on an iPod without the computer. Wouldn't be a good way, but a list of numbers and letters that you scroll through would work just fine. That way I could put people's cell number into my iPod on the spot. I use my iPod like that because I don't have a cell phone...I've just never seen the need.
The ogg 1.0 encoder ( not released yet ) is doing a really good job of low bit audio. The sample I listened to were about 4.5kbps, 200k for a whole track ( pop, vocals, guitar etc ). Was quite listenable. Imagine how long your battery would last, and how many you would get on an ipod, 20000 tracks on an ipod mini.

Yes this is of course the reason that this project is interesting. It allows a lot more flexibility with additional file support as well as completely new custom applications.
DISCLAIMER: No badgers or Macintoshes were harmed in the course of this test installation. Your results may vary. Please note that zombie badgers are banned in many municipalities in California and Wisconsin; zombie badgers must remain leashed at all times in Texas. Zombie badgers can move at great speeds, and are prone to sudden acceleration; use proper caution when driving your zombie badger. Do not allow your zombie badger to consume mushrooms or African snakes, or your badger may emit catchy techno music. Do not taunt zombie badgers. Prolonged use of a zombie badger may cause acne, insomnia, leprosy, unusual weather, or the end of time. Please dispose of your zombie badgers properly; consult your local recycling company for proper disposal protocols.

Using the scroll wheel on the iPod, this would actually be easier than you might initially imagine. The Bang and Olufsen Beocom 6000 telephone series (Now the BeoCom 1 I think) uses a scroll wheel like the iPod, and that is how you input people's names; by scrolling to the appropriate letters.
Does anyone think Apple will add it someday officially?
No, personally I don't. I think as the Linux port matures though it would not be unreasonable at all to see the possibility of FLAC playback sometime in the future, assuming the iPod has enough CPU power.

Why? You don't make any hardware modifications, only software and if that goes wrong you should be able to restore it with the Firmware Updater.

if you can't restore it, then say goodbye to the support

I especially like the disclaimer:

So it is indeed a practical idea.
