I am looking to buy a domain and set up a simple website for myself. Any suggestions on the betst place to purchase through as well as a good company to host it?
Pick a hosting provider that gives you the options that you want: how big will your site be, how many email accounts do you want, how much traffic do you think you'll get per month? $10 or so per month for a starter site package is reasonable.
You can request quotes from some web hosts at SitePoint Forums - it might be worth a look. I can't advise with the domain names, though, as I use a UK service... (ukreg.com)
Never liked oneandone. I have one domain hosted with them, and have never gotten on with their control panel...

For a couple of years, I've used mmaweb.com because they host JavaServer Pages (JSP) and they're very affordable (for a Java host). But the 1 & 1 offer does look very attractive. I just signed up just in case I need it. Related: you may also want to look into zonedit.com. I use ZoneEdit to manage my domain for the web and email forwarding. It's a free service up to a certain point (and I haven't hit that point yet). And dotster.com offers domain registrations.
I've kept Interland in my back pocket as a potential host for my site but a friend recently told me he felt like they were not as healthy as they were four years ago. Interland seems to offer all the latest flavors of PHP, Perl, SQL, etc.
Who else is a big-gun, best-technology kind of host?

(going to look at the ones mentioned here)
I have had so many accounts (over 30) with them, because they were who I recommended to clients for a long time...
Now, I feel that was the worst mistake I have made..
Interland is the most horrible company I have ever dealt with.
Their servers are crap, the performance is horrible, and the customer service is nothing but lies and deception.
Run!
