I have a lexmark and the cartrage(s) just well ... quit and they arent empty the stupid death chip(how's that legal?)

anyway... i am thinking of replacing it with a canon bubble jet, why is cannon ink so much cheaper? 8.99$ for cannon black and 29.99 for lexmark, and the lexmark cartrage seems smaller

does the cannon last 1/3 as long or does lexmark screw people over?

If my memory is correct, canon ink printers have the lower cost of maintenance for a normal or heavy use, dues to the small ink cost.

    Same for HP.

It depends on the model, but i have read in a test that canon where the best choice for this issue.

You will notice also, that the cheapest ink printer are also the one who cost the more to keep running.

    Quite agree Powerdoc.

Lexmark is known for having pretty good quality printers at a low cost, but their ink cartridges are a rip off.

Think of it this way - its like razors and razor blades.

You can buy a really nice and modern razor very cheaply and get a few blades with it, but the manufacturer makes more money from the replacement blades.

The Canon printers are a good balance between initial purchase cost and cost of buying consumables.

By the way, some printers (noteably the cheaper HPs and Epsons) can be so cheap to buy that it makes more sense to but the same printer again than buy new cartridges for them!

We sell a Lexmark for 30 GBP, and the cartridges for it for about 50GBP (Maplin, UK). They sold like hot cakes... :S

I'm also on the lookout for a new printer, to replace my worn out Epson C62. (I use it fairly infrequently, but whenever I do it tends to be for a few hundred pages at once - lots of pages) Am looking at the Canon i350, which after some discounts I can get on it will work out at about 50GBP. Cartridges would be compatible at about 5GBP for both colour and black.

The only worry is that the print head is not on the cartridge (good, as it makes cartridges cheaper) and Canon apparently heat the ink, making the printer head wear out quicker. Can the print heads on the Canon be replaced? (I know they could on the last one I had, an old BJC-70 bought in about 1993, but I'm guessing things have moved on a bit from then...)

BTW, the printer I tend to reccomend is the Epson C44, and I tell people to get the compatible cartridges for it (about 1/3 or less of the price of the originals). Unless the Canon i350 works out cheaper, which is looking likely, I'll probably continue to do so...
