I don't need a VPN connection anymore. But the VPN-icon still appears in the menubar.

How can I modify the menubar?

Is still a VPN-client running when the icon is shown in the menubar?

I'd like to have a clean menubar again ;o)

    command/apple-drag.

Just hold the command/apple key, click the menu extra you want to move or remove, and drag it side to side or off the menu bar altogether.

The same works with all of these:

    AirPort.menu

    Battery.menu

    Bluetooth.menu

    Classic.menu

    Clock.menu

    Displays.menu

    Eject.menu

    Enable.menu

    iChat.menu

    iSync.menu

    Ink.menu

    IrDA.menu

    Keychain.menu

    PCCard.menu

    PPP.menu

    PPPoE.menu

    RemoteDesktop.menu

    Script Menu.menu

    TextInput.menu

    User.menu

    Volume.menu

    VPN.menu

Menu extras can usually be removed and their parent processes will still be running. iChat is an exception to this rule. If you quit iChat and are still online, removing the menu extra will sign you off. Similarly, you can't use fast user switching without the User menu extra.
