Yikes!! A snippet from the article:

iMac distributors Ingram Micro and Tech Data are complaining that they have order backlogs of between 10 and 18 weeks for the computer, while some independent dealers may not get deliveries for up to four and a half months.

4 1/2 months!!!!

Ouch.

It is indeed bad at the moment. The problem is that Apple isn't saying what the issues are. Are they a shortage of flat screens, a firmware problem, a power supply cord problem or what? Although there is a 4 1/2 month maximum wait, that can change to 30 or 45 days if the above issues are resolved. Apple is not being forthcoming and as a shareholder it stinks.

I stopped by my local CompUSA today and for the first time they told me all preorders had been fullfilled and there were 3 Superdrive units on the floor ready to be bought. A couple was being introduced to the display iMac by a redshirt, who was very positive and was obviously having fun describing all the features. They bought one.

all i care is that the one my parents ordered shows up on time. after all this work talking them into a mac, i'd hate to see it ruined by a 4 month waiting period.

Why don't you just head down to the mall of america and pick one up? I hear the apple retail stores are doing ok with their stock. (Lucky bastards that have an apple store within a day's driving and don't take advantage of it )

As someone who pre-ordered a combo-drive iMac from a reseller (in canada to make matters worse), i am getting pretty nervous about when i will ever see my new machine. How many people have actually received Combo-drive units? anyone?

i called them up before placing an order, they said they were at the same 3-5 weeks. this was a while ago now....

man, if they had them in stock i wonder if apple would cancel the online order in exchange for a store order...

if you ordered from the apple online and you find one in an apple store...buy the store one and cancel the online one...very easy to do and apple will simple send the online one to the next customer...my orginal iMac DV was a two week wait online at the apple store in 1999...got one from outpost.com with next day shipping, so i canceled my apple online order...was no big deal....g

I thought Merrill Lynch's numbers were seriously skewed, but this C|Net report (not that it's more reputable) corroborates the crazy-low numbers. Though anecdotal evidence suggests more are in the channel than that, it is sounding more serious than I first thought.

C|Net used Merrill Lynch used CSFB used NPD. At each turn, more anti-Apple spin was used. CSFB was entirely inaccurate with their PS2 vs XBox vs GameCube numbers last winter.

Ah. I read the MacMinute blurb which mentioned C|Net's article and I simply glanced through. I never read closely enough. Thanks for setting me straight, Eugene.

I don't see how quoting what Ingram Micro has received is skewed. it's not like igram micro would lie.

You see a lot of people getting imacs or with them but most ordered through apple either online or their retail stores.

I am afraid that our worst fears are indeed true. I was watching the screen savers today and they announced that due to the shortage of the glass flat panel displays the new imac is going to see delays of 19 weeks....ouch. These guys are very reputable and wait to report anything until it is confirmed...however I checked the the apple store and it still says 3-5 weeks. and the apple store in denver said that it should be pretty easy to get one since they are still recieving regular shipments every week. I hope this issue gets resolved before the commercials air in 2 weeks at the oscars.

does anyone know if apple tries to fill their online store individual type orders BEFORE they supply resellers? like, what is the priority here... because i am wondering if by ordering now from the Apple store and cancelling my pre-order with the local dealer here in Ontario i would get my combo-drive model any faster. Any thoughts?

I think its now obvious that Ingram and other distributors are not getting the amount of iMacs they have ordered( which they then sell to brick and mortar Apple resellers.) Apple seems to be giving priority to its own on line sales and Apple Stores as well as some of the on-line resellers. CompUSA also seems to be getting a trickle of iMacs. I'd say that by the end of the month they will have sold at least 50,000 units. The Ingram amount is accurate it just doesn't tell the whole story.

i don't think this issue is as big as people are trying to make it out to be.....

    a) many people on this board have received iMacs (i received mine very close to the date that SJ promised)

    b) apple played a new iMac commercial last night before ER...would they start a TV media campaign if there was a 19 freakin week backlog??

    Thanks for the update.

I called MacMall to inquire about my order. I have been patient up to now just to check online. After reading this I decided to call. They indicated to me that they are receiving several shipments between now and next Wednesday which will in turn be immediately shipped to customers with backorders. The salesman told me the shortage is with the 700 mhz models, not with the 800s.
