the possibility of new imacs with g5's or something, what is the possibility, i know I've been asking and asking but its just now its not just my dads computer i have him waiting for but well now a whole small company heh. True the current iMacs are definitely suave, but still they need an update, I can see them getting a g5 faster than a powerbook. I just need a collective consensus before I say buy on these from people who know what I'm talking about... what's your word of advice?

Am I stupid also for holding them back?

(my apologies in advance is this is the wrong forum for this thread )

i think it should be in general discussion...

i say keep everyone waiting. it cant be too much longer, and it'll be so worth it. tell everyone i have your back

edit: i think a g5 (tower) would be the wisest purchase, depending on the business. tell them to wait a week.

Agreed, the iMacs need a G5. Betting on any kind of future Apple timeline is fruitless (ha ha, get it?). I'd go with the safe G5 tower, but if ya can't afford the $$$$, I'd wait a week or two and go get one. I've never had this problem, cuz we always buy on the first revision despite common wisdom.

If no new hardwre developments happen by mid-February, then buy whatever is available, probably the 17" iMac, I'd say. Though it depends on the requirements of the business.

    What do they do?

If we do see updated iMacs, G5 or not, it really depends again, on what they need. Are they grey-bearded number crunchers, or perhaps graphic artists or part of an advertising agency? It all depends.

The way I see it, is that the future is the G5 ? and whether the company is willing to invest in a more expensive G5 tower and 17" Apple LCD display that they'll hold onto for at least 3 or more years, or a G4/G5 iMac which may be replaced in a shorter time frame, it is the company's decision.

In short, tell them to wait until mid-February, and if nothing happens then, then make the decision. I fsomething does happen between now and then, make your decision then, bearing in mind product shipping dates. m.

If you need it now, buy it now.

If you're real concerned about the performance or whatever, just wait until the next rev, whenever that may be.

Its a mix of accounting, and shipping needs really, with some web design , and just stuff like that, just some friends who sell cooking supplies or something like that I'm not really sure. But hey they are on old iMacs and want to move to Os X and everything with their billing system. While we all know good and well the g4 imac is fine and dandy for this, think of the gut wrenching if you buy an imac only for 3 weeks later a g5 one is announced... thats the timeframe I'm assuming seriously. Back on topic tho

G5 imac will be coming up soon, or some sort of special notebook for 20th anniversary (not necessarily g5 based but special) My money is on the iMac cuz we all know well that it's Steve's little baby, but still there is much a certainty that something won't come out in commemoration than if something really does... Though it'd seem heartless for it not

    I'm thinking g5 imac... (period)

well, i just thought of this. keep in mind that even if something is released, it's gonna take a while to ship... i would still wait, but thats another consideration to make.

This is purchasing advice, not speculation about future Apple hardware, so off to GD it goes.

(p.s.: Historically, there's a PM update around this time. But if you buy what you need when you need it, you always have what you need.)

The iMac is a consumer beast. The G5 is currently the pro weapon of choice, so until the G5 is succeeded by something else, the G4 will remain the consumer weapon of choice.

    I partly agree with you.

How come everybody here seems to be expecting a G5 in the iMac?

the G5 is definitely targeted at the pro market, powermac/xserve/powerbook. The latter are the only pro product that need to be updated to the new chips (if at all).

it has just been introduced and hasn't even seen a first update.

I would be very surprised if the iMac got a G5 in the next revision.

It would hurt the credibility of Apple's pro line if the same chip would be running in consumer products as well.

The only way I see this happening is if the pro line are gonna migrate to a G6 within a year from now. That would just mean that Apple would've dropped Motorola completely and migrated its entire product line to IBM. Which IMHO still is a risky affair to do.

ok, Motorola's G4s suck and need to be dumped.

I'd say they're gonna update the iMac indeed, cos it needs to.

the current incarnation just doesn't have the same kinda spunk the old one had. But I think it's far more likely to be a new 32bit chip.

Apple needs to keep having a consumer chip.

But it is not Motorola's G4, I say they'll use a different altivec enabled G3/G4 variety from IBM that currently scales up to about 1,8-2GHz.

They must have a chip like that I'd say...

    I don't know, I just don't see a G5 iMac happening.

it would be coolish for us but foolish of them.

then again, what the hell do I know?

Good points. Though the rest of the computer's architecture also matters. And also, there could be an entirely dual processor Power Mac line up due to the incredibly high proportion of PMG5 sales being the Dual models. Single processors in a G5 iMac and Dual in the PMG5 would be a rather big distinction in my opinion.

Also, albeit the 1.6 GHz PPC 970 is built on the 130 nm process, we may see this in the iMac, and speeds in the range of 2.0 GHz - 2.4 GHz in Dual processor PMG5s using the 90 nm process.

Again, only my thoughts, and purely speculation... m.

yeah, but architecture only means something to freaks like us.

the vast majority of buyers are relative lay peeps.

to me, a line with singles in consumer machines and duals in pro machines just says that the company doesn't have beef enough processors to put into their pro machines so they just use a double consumer chip.

Even though we all know the G5 is a kick ass chip, putting it into a consumer machine already would kill the buzz and awe around the chip almost completely.

and that, in music jargon, would just plain suck

It is almost a fact that iMac 2 will get a CPU upgrade. There are, however, two possibilities:

    1. Since Motorola's G4 is apparently stuck beyond hope, there must be another speedier CPU supporting a speedier system architecture from IBM. Be it 7xx or 97x, without further upgrades iMacs are ultimately doomed to stop being purchased.

    2. The iMac 2 is soon going to be killed (just like iMac 1) and replaced with another home-use-targeted machine. iMac 3? Cube 2?

I think the 1 is more likely, but who knows? This is a rhetorical question: Mr. Jobs does.

The G4 iMac line still has some life left in it. Remember that Apple sold Power Macs with 1.42Ghz processors. They could stick those and 1.33s in the iMacs and add firewire 800 and Gigabit ethernet and call it a day.

It'll be a while until G5 iMacs. Buy now unless you want to wait for a little bit sexier specs.

i believe those 1.42s were overclocked (1.25) chips.

they were dropped as soon as the G5 were there, now there's only 1.25s

overclocked chips aren't the best idea to put into a iMac base me thinks...

no, it needs a new processor alright, but I think it might go to a different (32bit) IBM chip before it will see a G5.

    but that's just my 2ct
