iMovie saved jpegs read only by current jpeg viewers?

I was wondering why jpegs saved by iMovie 3.03 can be read by Photoshop 7.0, but not 6.0. I have noticed this in other jpeg viewers also...........they can be read by current viewers, but not viewers or applications a year old. Anyone know why this is?
