Windows based server problems?

Does anyone know a good reason why a windows server would be considerably slower when being accessed by a mac than a PC. My IT guy has switched from a Novell solution to Windows server and it is considerably slower than the novell server was. I have also noticed that if I am downloading from that server onto a PC it is faster than my downloads to my mac. Any insight would be helpful.

Do you know which Windows server it is? NT, 2000, 2003?

Is it the Windows Server a Domain controller. I remember a problem with W2K DC's acting as file servers. There was slow download time due to TCP delayed ACK's. An SMB problem I think. Your PC will probably be slow but the mac slower as the mac's SMB stack isn't the same as the PC's.

There was a registry hack for the Server. (if it is the server that has the problem).

Use a network analyser to track packets. (download PacketBoy for the PC its an awesome shareware network analysis tool.) The mac has tcpdump.

Are there any differences/timeouts/delays? I assume the machines are all on the local lan?

There are definitely other problems, such as just dropping the connection. The server will often drop the connection to my mac 5 or six times a day. My IT guy has replaced the network card a couple of times because that is what he believes is causing the dropped connections. I just think his server is crap it is something he put together. It seems to be quality parts and it should be a good server but it is just horribly slow and has had many problems. He is not a fan of macs and I believe that he wants to get rid of them. I am just trying to do any and everything I can to counteract any negativity that he may try to establish for my platform of choice. I can just see him saying that the problem is the macs and that if we were on PC's we wouldn't have to worry about it.
