Garageband & MicroKorg

Hey everybody,

You all helped me purchase a Powerbook G4-800 a long while back, and I need some more advice.

I just purchased some new recording equipment so I can use Garageband, and I'm wondering whether to buy a Keystation-49 as a MIDI controller, or if I should jump to the $300 mark and buy a used MicroKorg.

One major question in my mind: can the Korg act as a sampler? In other words, can I sample my own sounds and then assign them to different keys to play them back? Would it be best to just buy a Boss DrSampler or is there a cheaper alternative?

I really like the effect of "playing" samples at points during songs, on-or-off rhythm, and adding them real-time over a near-final edit of a song.

Also, does anybody have experience using a Rode NT1 microphone with the new MobilePre by Midiman?

Thanks for any help/advice you've got w/re: the above. You guys are great.

Regards,

Peter

The microkorg doesn't sample, but it can be used as a midi controller so you can use a software sampler and assign keys that way. I would look into Reason.. it's fairly inexpensive for what it can do.

GB does NOT take advantage of any knobs or dials on a keyboard, so the keystation 49e is PERFECT *for Garageband*

for reason, knobs and dials are incredibly handy as the synths are FAR more sophisticated than GB's synths.

The microKorg is a nice little synth though with great sound. You gotta love the built in mic for the vocoder. You could use it to control midi and also record the synth/vocoder directly into GarageBand.

Yeah, at one time I almost bought an old MS20... I'm happy I didn't. This is the next best thing... actually better in many ways. Plus you get 2 other classic synths with it. $500 isn't bad for all this.. and I'm sure since this is just the MSRP, it'll be found for less on many online stores.

    yeah, which is awesome

My brother has a roland jp-8080, it has a pretty neat vocoder, as well as gobs of synthy goodness. but I really like that korg, If I had the dough to blow, I'd probably get it.
