iBooks and OS X

How well can the iBooks (specifically the 500Mhz DVD-ROM) run OS X? Is it so slow that it would be better to just run it in OS 9? Or do you think if it was loaded with RAM it would run well enough without so much lag?

Some will say that OS X won't run good on iBooks, but I've got the 500MHz DVD model with 384MB RAM and I think it runs great.

Interesting... Another question. How is the image quality on the 14" screen iBook?

I run MacOS X on my 600Mhz iBook with 384MB RAM. Runs great, i removed the transparent menus with a application called Duality 3, speeds everything up.

About the 14" iBook. Its ugly, heavy and "wrong".

Just go for the 12" iBook, its great.

The quality is better on the 12". Much sharper and brighter.

after reading EmAn's post look at his post count and you'll see what the majority of use his iBook sees is.. then you'll see why he believes it runs great

14 inch iBook looks fine, is extremely sturdy, and a nice package for the price.

can't agree with that either/ brightness seems the same to me. sharpness would obviously be better on the 12 inch but not by much

The best way to find out if the 14" iBook rocks or sucks is to try it.

Based on six months of experience using OS X on my iBook 500, it is somewhat sluggish, but useable. I wouldn't use it because of the speed, except for the fact that I like the OS X programs and the UNIX part of it. Unfortunately my LCD just died (after a slew of other problems cropped up and two repairs made them worse), so they are sending me a replacement - 600MHz, 100MHz bus, combo, etc...

I'll let you know how fast OS X is on my new one when i ge tit.

I would have to agree!! I had a 500mhz ibook for 3 weeks, ans sold it because I want to only use X, no OS9 even installed! The 500 with the 66mhz bus could run X ok, but it really felt as though it was chocking a lot. I had the RAM maxed at 576mb and still it sucked! I recently dived back in and bought a 600mhz ibook/DVD for $1099, popped in RAM (for 640mb) and I really notice the difference!! This book feels like it was made for OSX, and is quite responsive. I use Illustrator, BBedit, VPC, and tons of stuff, and it rocks!! I must say, am I the first to notice that OSX runs significantly better with no presence of classic?? I really feel it does! Anyway, just felt like sharing!! ibook 600 is the way to go!! Well, until the 700 comes out at least. <img src="graemlins/lol.gif" border="0" alt="[Laughing]" />
