Nope, not Sir Bill Gates. You can only be given that prefix if you're a native Briton.

Yeah. I have never heard obs give anything to charity or anything. And the only comment ever on 911 was the cancellation of MW paris the following year and the ususal blaming for the bad economy.

    Do Jobs have a soul?

Personally I am always find 'charity snobs' a bit dodgy. They are usually some c-list celeb "comedian" and they always witter on about golf.

i agree... i respect anyone who donates to charities, but i am always wary of those highly affluent people who make a public presence while they do it. i mean, microsoft took in TEN BILLION last quarter, yet bill and melinda make $50,000 donations sound like they actually mean something to them. hell, that's probably the change they found under their sofa seats.

well, at least they're donating something back, so it's not all bad. maybe i just hate melinda for unleashing "microsoft bob" on us.

I hear its only 1 million, but who knows with inflation.

Bill Gates is more or less self made (ok, his father is also wealthy but Bill is smart), and I think he intends to have his children have that sense of self.

What an abomination. At least have the decency to Knight the people who invented the mouse and GUI s well... he certainly had nothing to do with the shift in computing paradigms. When you get down to it, his contribution was DOS (the antithesis of what is being rewarded one presumes) and then doing a great job of selling windows. Selling is not inventing.

    Try $23,000,000,000 instead.

Look We can all agree that Jobs and his team brought us the best computer experience ever but Gates is doing much much more good for the world that Jobs have or ever will do.

Maybe I missed something. Is he being K-nighted for his contributions to the business world (via the mass adoption of personal computers), or for his charitable works? The article is a bit wishy-washy on this point. Is it about "Enterprise in the UK" or charity?

To be both is a bit disingenuous IMO. Either he's done enough for charity to be Knighted, or he hasn't. Don't try and crow-bar multiple categories in there in order ot have it make sense. This is a big deal in England still, no?

Wishy-washy should not apply. It isn't proper! I mean, if David Beckham was to given $50M to charity, should he be knighted as well for his "Service to the community and excellent kicking skills"?

Its Gates own money, not microsoft miney.

Lots of money for AIDS research and medicine. Lots of money for education. Those are AFAIR the main areas.

Read the link. There is no way to talk away what Gates are doing.

Because he use his funds to help africans to free themselves from medical and educational barrieres. Not to help live out your childhood fantasies.

    "I am your King!"

    "I didn't vote for you...."

"You don't vote for a King!"

This whole Knighting process is disturbing to me.
