Finder unstable ??

Since a week, my Finder is behaving strangely and I don't know why. I made a clean install of Panther more than a month ago (version 10.3.2), and it was working very well. I have a full Gig of ram on my dual 867 MHz.

Now, very often (about twice a day, more or less), the Finder quit unexpectedly and restart without apparent reason.

Also, each time I restart the computer or when I log in, launching an OS X app for the first time gives me a warning window about Classic doesn't have enough memory to hold the clip-board (Classic is automatically loaded on my system, because I need it often). Huh ? It didn't made this before, two weeks ago.

Are you experiencing something like this, in Panther 10.3.2 ?

I just had a finder problem a few days ago. I had to reinstall the entire OS. I also formatted the drive because Tech Tool Pro found a disk error it could not fix. I spent the last 2 days reinstalling applications and I still have to copy my documents from my backup. The reinstall also fixed some other problems I had (Apache never worked right) and there seems to be a big speed boost. I guess OS X does slow down over time like other OS's but probably not as fast.

That's why I made four partitions on my HD. All my documents, and almost all my apps, are safe on separate partitions. Panther is (almost) alone on its partition, except for the many iTunes files I have there and few other things. The only thing which is pissing me off, if I had to reinstall everything, are the preferences.

Anyway, we're not supposed to reinstall the entire OS. If something goes wrong in its behavior, it's almost certainly the preferences which have gone corrupted.

But why the Classic warning about clip-board and memory ? This is a strong hint to the origin of my Finder problems.

Where is the clip-board stored ? Is there a file related to the clip-board ? Where ?

~/Library/Caches is where you need to be looking. I don't run Classic (heck, don't even have it installed), so I can't give you a filename to look for, unfortunately, but I suspect that your Classic clipboard file is massive. Look in there for a big ol' file, and see if it has a relevant name to boot. Something vague and undescriptive like com.apple.Classic.clipboard...

Can I safely erase anything in the Cache folder ?

I didn't saw anything related to Classic or to the clip-board, in the Cache folder.

Yes, you can safely delete the Caches folder. This is very frequently fix, so frequently that it is listed as a step in our Genius Bar Sticky: FAQ: Check here first if you have problems!

Delete away! Read that thread and try the generic fixes too.

Also, check the Accounts panel of the System Preferences to see if anything is loading as a Startup Item for your user that could be causing problems.

There is also a Caches folder inside the main Library. Mine is full of sub-folders from many apps. Can I erase them too ?

The Caches folders are just that: caches. They don't contain essential data, just cached data. So, delete away!

Yup. I can crash it just by opening a lot of Windows (all in Library for example) and using Exposé then closing them, and that was right after instalilng 10.3 then 10.3.2, and having not installed a single thing yet. I was horified. 10.3.2 is probably as bad a version for stability as 10.2.8 at least for me. Was Panther this unstable before 10.3.2?

I'm not seeing anything of the sorts of behaviours you are reporting, so I can't say... been stable for me pre and post 10.3.2.

My Finder crashes happens from time to time when I have many windows opened with lots of files in them. There is maybe an interaction with the icon preview (in the Finder), as I was managing some picture files (no, it wasn't porn stuff ! Only planet textures for Celestia).

But there's someting more : the Finder crashed at least three times in the last week when I was downloading something in Safari. The Finder was in the background while Safari was in the foreground. Then I saw the Finder quit (all desktop icons disapeared) and few secs later the Finder was back. This is really annoying.
