Problems were found, but Disk First Aid cannot repair them.

The first problem is that I'm technically inept and broke to boot. That aside, though, I had to force a restart last night, and Disk First Aid reported this: "Missing thread record, 3011346, 698". DFA 8.6.1 can't repair it. I have no means of backing up my files, and the closest thing I have to a disk repair utility is TechTool Lite.

I'm running Mac OS 9.0.4, and so far, even with the problem, everything seems to be functioning correctly, but I'm afraid that this one missing record will cause bigger problems later. I've tried doing routine maintenance stuff--like rebuilding the desktop and other acts of wishful thinking--but nothing has fixed the problem so far. Would reinstalling the system help, or just be a waste of my time? If anyone has any workable solutions, God, please share them.

If Disk First Aid will not fix this then it is likely you need to wipe the drive and start again. Perhaps if you can borrow another disk utility from someone else it might be repairable.

You don't have any backup? Even with a good HD you really need backups. Somehow you need to fix this. Maybe you can borrow a FW HD from someone, copy all your data and burn it to CDs on another system?

DiskWarrior -- the best hard drive repair tool for a Mac, IMNSHO.

I bet DW could fix this case. I know for a fact that it's fixed drives of mine with the exact same error in the past (well, with different record numbers).

DITTO what Brad said. Get DiskWarrior!

Now on a 9.0.4 system, an older version of Norton might work.

Got any friends with disc repair utilities? Otherwise, you gotta back up and reformat... you're right, this will bite you hard someday if you don't fix it.

Thanks, guys! At the very least, you've saved me from a pointless reinstall. I only know one other person who actually uses a Mac, so I guess I'll be giving him a call later today. (My friends who actually have computers are PC-users.) Backups are pretty much a financial impossibility right now, and Disk Warrior will have to wait until income tax returns come back. In any case, though, actually knowing what I need to do is a step in the right direction (and much less stressful than trying to guess).

Update: I erased the drive and reinstalled, but now I keep getting a blank white screen and the dreaded question mark on startup. After that, it switches over to the happy Mac and starts up as normal. Any suggestions?
