The news is so depressing. The news out of Florida and Moscow just causes one to pause. Neither story is about something which is new. Both of these kinds of things have happened before. Even so please weigh in with your thoughts.

The Russian people have lived with a constant sorrow that we can never understand

In the 1200s they were invaded by the Mongols who decimated city after city, killing ALL of the populations and doing the same with a myriad of towns and villages and even burned crops to make sure the people died . . . major cities were completely wiped off the map, such as the city of Bulgar; who's population was estimated to be in the tens of thousands. ever heard of Bulgar?!

They ruled Russia for over two hundred years during which they periodically decimated regions and towns

Because of the Mongol invasion of Russia and their decimation of Poland and Hungary and Bulgaria, these places did not experiance the Rennaissance

(And even Persia, which had been a strong aggricultural region before the Mongols, became arid and NEVER recovered after them. . . by the way they killed the entire Muslim population of Baghdad which was the center of Islam at the time!)

Russia remained in the Dark ages after the Mongols finally left: they were fractured and the people were completely oppressed by petty 'lords' who fought amongst themselves . . . the Russians lived in depressed unspeakable misery

and then WW-1 came and thousands and thousands of Russians were killed; slaughtered as inept semi-feudal armies went up against well trained modern Germans and Austrians

but the Revolution fixed all of the Feudal misery and replaced it with more misery, Lenin started the oppression, it was not only Stalin

but Even so Lenin died and Stalin took over: Millions killed outright, and Millions upon millions starved deliberately, as well as putting in place an iron clad oppression and fear and mistrust of everybody

But then WW-2 came and made the horror even deeper, as the German's, who consciously took their war strategies from the Mongol hordes, invaded and burned crops and plundered and killed: millions died, more Russians died in the wars than any other people . . . not just more, BY FAR more Rusians died . . . probably twice or three times more . . . the population of Men was devestated: the ratio of men to women after the war was something like 4 or 5 to 1 . . .

But when the war ended . . the Stalin terror continued and in various forms under other leaders, but not nearly as bad

Then Capitalism came and freed everybody so that they could be oppressed by huddlums and organized crime, a thouroughly ruined economy, starvation and living in the streets, prostitution etc all amidst the shabby miserable detritus of teh Soviet "Empire" . . . it is as if they never got out of the Dark Ages,

and never had the chance to even heal the Historical Scars started by the Mongols, scars that continued forming from the 13th century up until . . . well, still continuing

It's very true: the Russian people have -- as a rule -- rarely known any condition other than hardship. There are of course those who are not mobsters and who at the same time have benefited from capitalism there, but a small minority when you consider the entire population.
