New Mac

I am new to Apple and have always been a PC user. I have decided to make the switch and buy a Mac. I have saved enough money to buy a G5 and a 17" monitor. I will not be playing demanding games or doing any serious photoshop work, etc. I will mostly use this computer for photos (4000+), internet, and importing a lot of DV. The movies are only home movies. I am mostly importing them to have a backup, but I will do some editing and DVD burning.

My question: Should I buy a G5 or an iMac? How much RAM would be sufficent for my needs?

Thanks for your opinion!

I would buy a dual 1.8... that machine is the current price/performance sweetspot. iMacs are still using G4s, so they won't be as futureproof. I would wait until mid-March, when there's another Mac trade show (in Paris?) and possibly a G5 refresh before buying anything. As nice as the G5 is (I have a dual 2.0), they are getting close to the end of the 6 month refresh cycle.

Don't buy the Apple 17"... way overpriced, and are rumored to be updated soon too. Just buy a nice Samsung or other w/ DVI.

Either will work perfectly. I have a dual G5 and will never go back, but I did everything you're talking about with my old LCD iMac. It was a bit too slow for really heavy DV work, but it was a 700 MHZ G4 and a 15" screen. My dual is really good though.

Find out in future hardware what the E.T.A. is on a new iMac. If a newer model is coming soon, that might be the way to go. Otherwise I'd stick with a G5 and its larger harddrives for lots of video.

I'm sure the G5 trumps the iMac quite soundly in working with DV. But if you like a nice all-in-one package and aren't THAT demanding of the user, save yourself some bucks and go with the iMac. Put the savings toward RAM and whatnot.

I certainly understand the appeal of the G5 for those truly requiring the muscle, but if I were in your position, I'd get the 17" or 20" iMac, hands down.
