Real Player, or......

The other day I was trying to download a soundfile from npr.org. When I clicked on the link, I got the infamous "there is no default application..." dialog box, which usually means I give up, since if the computer doesn't know what to do, I sure don't. What should I use for downloaded sound files?

    There are many options.

The two most windows friendly media players are VLC and Mplayer

These will play .avi, .wma, .asf, .divx etc etc.

and are very useful to have, I'm not sure if it will work for the npr.org stuff, but you could try copying the link and then pasting it into the "open location" or "open URL" in either of those programs(or quicktime)

Real player uses a proprietary format called .ram As far as I know, The RealOne player is the only player I know that plays this format.

I'm not to fond of Real player, it's rather buggy and limited, I wish more people would use iTunes compatible streams.

I just went over to the site, and was able to hear every file in the RealOne player. Since they also offer windows Media player format, that will work in VLC or Mplayer fwiw

Thanks, BADBOT. I'm on a PC now, but I'll try that again later tonight.
