Lucas swore he would never allow it. But the dollar rules, and he must realize at this point that there's a hell of a lot of cash to be made here. Time for him to eat his pride and give us what we want.

Original Trilogy on DVD!

Now if only we could have one of those edited versions of Episode 1 on DVD too...

That is cool, I'm worried that maybe this DVD release will be sub-par to what they were initially planning(a massive 6 movie box set with gobs of extra crap)

I would really like to see them go back to episode 4,5,6 and Re-do the re-done/added scenes. The CGi today(as seen in episode 2 for example) is worlds better than the CGi used in 4,5,6.

Granted ,I'm not a big fan of the added scenes, they are here to stay so might as well make them as best as they can be.

Actually it is the SE's of the original trilogy, NOT the before he made Greedo shoot first trilogy.. that is the ones he said he would never release... and he isn't releasign those now. these are the SE's(and yes, they still or the original trilogy, because he isnt done making the new trilogy)

If it really is the "Special" editions then I'm not buying it.

Yes, it really is the "special" edition. I'm not a star wars geek so could someone please tell me what's the big deal and why star wars geeks hate the new SE of the old trilogy?

I don't consider myself a star wars geek at all. The Special Editions were the ones that were re-released in the late 90's with jazzed up special effects. What pissed me off is more from a cinema perspective. Lucas and successors made masterpieces and there was no reason to go back and touch it up. There was also the thing with changing around who shot first in the Han Solo scene at the bar. For me what it comes down to is that I hate when directors go back and try and update their works.

If we're going to get that picky, I guess he'll never release the original Star Wars before it became "Episode IV: A New Hope" - the one that was available as a pirate VHS in the 70s.

and as one of them countered so well

Frankly, I can see both sides of the argument. Yes, editing the content (Greedo) is downright petty (Spielberg did the same thing: shotguns vs. flashlights), however it's their work so as long as they don't tear things apart fundamentally, this is as good as it's going to get.

a few problems with the "special" edition.

the biggest of course being that Han shoots in self defense. pretty much makes any character development for him impossible. he never changes, which was kind of the point of his character.

the more annoying part to me actually is the pointless addition of CGI to the thing. stupid stuff that doesn't make the movie any better, and actually mananages to look a lot cheesier than foam puppets and wooden starships.

it's sad that the 20 year old segments look more believable than the 2 year old ones.

if you look on bittorrent sites you can find the laserdisc rips. as soon as we get dual layer burning abilities, i'm making myself a real DVD version of my VHS tapes.

Because THX lost to Dolby for the standard audio format on a DVD.

i actually never thought he was. it's just that he started doing the special editions which lead to the early trilogy and he never had time.

he didn't want them to come out unless they were done proper (which leads me to ask why he's only releasing the SE's)

Because he's an asshat. Or maybe he just doesn't want them to steal the thunder of the FAR worse prequel series. I always thought that the episodes 4, 5 and 6 DVDs wouldn't come out until after episodes 1, 2 and 3 came out on DVD.

I think the added scenes in the Special Edition were kind of dumb - on the other hand, the enhanced special effects I did like. Greedo shooting first was the absolute worst. Han talking to Jabba (which was just a repeat of his conversation with Greedo) was also fairly stupid. Making the snow monster look more alive and agile rather than looking like a hand puppet was good.

I might buy these sometime if I get the money.

actually, what i'd really like to do (if it looked ok) would be to edit in the good parts of the redone series (all 3 of them) and the good parts of the original. wonder how the sound/video would work out.
