Well it looks like I will be no longer able to use my Powerbook for work! I need to use MS Access and Lotus Notes and it appears that i won't be able to use those on my Mac! I will be forced to use my Dell. This sucks.

I take it VirtualPC isn't an option?

What kind of Mac do you have there?

He mentions a PowerBook. Honest to goodness, I'd quit - and actually have before - a job if I had my Mac-using ways taken from me.

Simply not interested in using Windows on any level. Sorry.

You know there is a current version of Lotus Notes for OS X. It sucks but not as bad as Windows.

I just don't like the monolithic nature of the program. I prefer my apps separate. As far as other stuff, I've got to admit, I used a beta last year so it could have changed, but it was just clunky, didn't sync with my pocketpc (back then) and was just not as intuitive as I would have liked. If you know how to use it, I'm sure it's powerful. But something as simple as figuring out someone's email address was difficult (my address would show up as \\Duke\\Psychiatry\\House Staff\\Sammy B\\) so I couldn't easily figure out how to just type in someone's address. :/

It is powerfull,, true and it can be tailored to user's needs like you wouldn't believe :-)

    And that e-mail address actually makes sense, Notes/Domino uses it's own addressing scheme: Duke-your insitiution/Psychiatry-Department/House Staff-Group/Sammy B-You.

This way you can easily send messages to entire institutiuon, group, people etc. When you would type only Psychiatry in address field message would be delivered to that department, or in case with many departments/groups with Psychiatry in their names, you would be presented with options.

But heh i agree it can be confusing at times.

Maybe you should read a book... just make sure it is one that YOU have bought.

That's pretty fanatical, Paul, even for this forum!

No it's not. It's simply a matter of what I'm comfortable with and enjoy and have 11 or years years invested in. Why would I want to embrace something that I have no interest in or desire to use?

I believe I use a better platform, that simple. At least for the type of work I do. There's no doubt in my mind that's the case. Key words: "I believe", so cut me a little wiggle room and don't look at it as some snooty, elitist statement, just because it's the thing to say.

It's actually more a case of me being lost, ineffecient, frustrated because I don't know it that well (or want to), etc. I wouldn't be a good, productive employee or be doing anyone any good.

That's not fanatical. Them's just facts.

I got a job in San Diego once, and it was sold as Mac-based (typesetting, file-prepping, artwork clean-up/retouching, etc. Started working there and after four days I was still using some Windows 2000-based machine, with no firm/clear answer of why I was when the job clearly stated "experienced Mac-based production artist". I left on that fourth day after hearing a particularly horseshit-laden answer.

If ads don't specify it, the first question out of my mouth when talking to prospective employer or ringer is "are you Mac based?". If not, I don't see the point in wasting either of our time any further.

Bottom line: this "fanatic" has been happily employed for the past decade in some amazing, interesting jobs, making more money than a dork like me should be making.

    All of them Mac-based.

Although I've lately added a follow-up question, if they do answer "yes" to the Mac-based one: "Are you using OS X?". Because I absolutely despise OS 9 and really don't want much to do with it either. It would have to be the ultimate dream gig (painting Fairuza Balk's toenails or something) for me to even give in to OS 9 these days.
