I was wondering if there was any small menubar applet that can monitor various websites and merely let me know if they have changed?

There are several sites I end up checking more often than I need to only because they change infrequently...

There was a specific app that could do this, but I forget. Check Macupdate or Versiontracker.

    Versiontracker has one

whose limited reviews don't give a lot of confidence.

This one seems newer and claims Safari integration

WebTracker allows you to easily monitor web site. When it notice a change, it immediately inform you by different way (prompt a window, open the page in a browser, play a sound, ...). You can also import your Safari's bookmarks. A plug-in is available for Safari for easily add a url to your monitored list.
