I have an iMac (233) using Mac OS 9.2.2

Internet connection is DSL

Just got the, Linksys, Etherfast Cable/DSL router m/n: BEFSR41.

Only comes with PC, set-up info.

I went to the Linksys site and can't find any help with set-up on Mac.

Anyone know how to set this router up using a Mac?

Thanks

I used to have one of those. Great little router.

If it's all hooked up (DSL Modem -->Linksys (WAN) -->iMac (In either 1,2,3 or 4)), then all you have to do is open Safari (or whatever browser you use) and type http://192.168.1.1.

A box will come up asking for the username and password. The default for Linksys routers is admin for both - change it immediately!

Once you're in, just configure it with your settinge (IP address, subnet, gateway, etc.)

Givew that a shot. I think that's how it goes.

    Good luck!

do you wanna use it as a dhcp server? its a lot easier somewhat that way. I have a linksys wireless 4 port router I swear by, though lately I hear they are lacking in the quality department.

Well, he asked about just getting it going with his iMac, so no real need for DHCP, but I used to run mine that way (with multiple computers attached).

I just got a Linksys WRT54G and it's very solid, setup was a breeze.

I dig Linksys stuff. They do it right.

How do you handle the WEP encryption stuff?

Isn't the key on the Lynksys a hex key and the one on the mac with Airport card is a ASCII. How do you hook the Mac up to a non-Airport WLAN with WEP enabled?

Or do you need to fall back to 40-bits?

    Thanks for the posts.

I can't get this thing to work

I hook it up as stated in the instructions, but when I type in the address (http://192.168.1.1/) I get a message saying it can't connect? Why?

There must be more to this mystery, than meets the eye. I was hoping to get this thing going without having to call customer support on Monday, but I guess I have no choice.

Question: Most things to day are plug and play. Why can't these routers be this way?

hey go to tcp/ip preferences and make sure that "server assigns IP" I think is thats its called is checked. Also make sure you're not using a crossover cable (they look the same).

But a regular ethernet cable... i know i know... but it gets me evertyime.

    I don't use WEP.

The reason I bought the WRT54G is because it supports WPA - much better than WEP.

I set up the router and created a new network on my PC, then opened up my PowerBook and selected the new network via the Airport widget in my menubar, it asked me for my WPA shared key, I entered it and volia!

    It works great.

Yeah, kraig911 is probably right - it might be easiest to set it up with DHCP.

Wilstone, in System Preferences, click on Network, the click on TCP/IP.

Here you can set it up Manually (if you have and want to use a static IP) or you can select Using DHCP.

With DHCP, the router assigns the IP and everything should work fine.

Let us know if it works.

    I got the router working.

Thanks to everyone for all the help.

It turns out that I only needed to add @sympatico, to my user name and it worked. Too bad the manual didn't tell me this?

Any way, currently running my iMac & PS2 without any problems, next week I will add a Compaq PC.

    Cheers
