Is an MCSE or any certification worth it?

I'm writing this question on a Mac. I've had my Mac for almost a year now and I love it. I think my Mac is the best computer I've ever owned. Istarted off with a commodore 64 then eventually got a clone PC then a Dell laptop and now my Mac.

I'm still in the computer field and I use PC's at work. It seems though that in order to advance in the computer field you need to be certified. If you don't have an MCSE or anything close to it you'll hit the glass ceiling. So I've passed two of these seemingly useless exams. I need five more to get the MCSE Cert.

Is it worth it?

is there any other alternative?

Is there anything else out there?

At $125 an exam it's going to take some thought.

The floor is yours...

I think they're useless from a technical standpoint.

However, MS has managed to sell everybody in IT and business on the so-called worth of these things, and made sure that their systems are byzantine enough that businesses like to see certification before letting anyone access their systems. So in the sense of career advancement, they're pretty necessary.

    MS wins again.
