G5 Shorted out!

My house is filled with the smell of burning wire.

Oh I am so sad right now. My brother came home and I slipped in his drive he brought from his G5 at school. I fired it up (heh, no pun intended) and the thing smelled like burning wire. I got worried and went straight for the wall plug. No power, G5 down, all good right? Nope.

It looks like the drive squeezed a wire in the back of the G5 and the aluminum cut and shorted the it. My flash doesn't make it very far into the G5 this pic shows some of the melted wire.

I'm sad. Soo sad. I'm going down to an apple store tomorrow. Not looking forward to it.

How did your brothers drive do? Did it shave the same punishment, or is it OK. Not that this is the big deal in this situation...

You know I really haven't been wandering around the innards of my G5 yet, (give me a couple of years) but if there is a problem with the mother board, and hopefully not with the processors or too many vital parts and pieces. That could be changed with some more new wiring harnesses... and so forth...

The part I'm curious about. With the G5, are these Processors slotted like the G4 is, and or does anyone think that they could be upgraded down the road?

(Thats if anyone made a G5 upgrade processor for the G5. Purely talking about way down the road)

Got back from the Apple store. Of course it's my fault for adding a second drive (stupid me ) so applecare is gone. The hard drives should be fine. the outside of a hard drive is grounded along with the rest of the case and should keep the innards protected. It's the $150-$750 price tag I'm not too happy with.

Wiring harnesses or conduits are an EXCELLENT idea. With all that aluminum, those sharp edges, and tight spaces, I can't believe Apple hasn't thought about something like that. Of course we'll see all these fixes in the revision 2 G5.

So they gave you an guess on the estimate, with a call to be expected with the actual costs? $600 is a wide range, and no more Apple care.. a sad day indeed. I hope a tech feels for you, and it ends up being a wiring harness... and $100., your back in business. Best wishes...

Can't you just replace the wire?

TO change the subject, nice camera! What is it, 5+MP? I could never get a picture that crisp with mine (4MP)

My first digital camera. It's a Canon D60. 6.3 Megapixel Digital SLR with a $300 Tamron 24-135mm lens. Shot with the built-in flash in RAW mode (default last time I used the camera) and I applied an Unsharp mask to the image in photoshop.

It is a great camera in good light and OK in poor light.

Just a tip, the depth of field is so shallow when you are that close, you're better off backing up a few feet and zooming in. It gives you more field of focus which helps bring out detail.

Depth of field is a tricky thing. I think I just about got a hang of it. Doesn't show in that pic though. In my video class, we try to emphasize D.O.F, while in photography it is tricky to reduce it. Photo cameras typically have larger apertures than video cameras. Anyways, I enjoy assignments that challenge use of D.O.F but it is not something I think about all the time. Probably why I am not a stink'n rich photographer.8)

Mastering it and then breaking the rules is a lot of fun Blurring and focus are nice extremes if you can "paint" the right things with it.

I thought adding additional drives didn't void the warranty

i have yet to see the innards of a g5, (outside the poster in the apple store) but if the short was caused by a faulty or lack of a wire harness, that sounds more like a manufacture defect, not to mention a safty hazard, if this sort of thing isnt EXTREAMLY isolated, then maby a recall is in order here

"The warranty does not apply ... to damage caused by service (including upgrades and expansions) performed by anyone who is not a represenitive of Apple or an Apple authorized Service Provider."

That's me! Although I could probably work at the Apple store Genus bar as I am now.
