Airport linkage between G4's? :::

read somewhere that two powerbook g4's can transfer files with each other w/out a base station........



was wondering if there's anyway of doing this with either one powerbook and one powermac or two powermacs?



also, if one of them had the internet connection, could that cpu act as the base station, and the other cpu's access it?



if you use a powermac, does it need an airport card to use this [assuming you can do it]?

    1. I think so. MacWorld from a few months ago may have a way....but I forget.



    2. all machines must have AirPort. But, files can be traded via crossover ethernet cable as well.



    3. There is no software base station yet for OSX. Perhaps in 10.2. It can work in OS9 though.

    In OS 9, it's possible to set up a "software base station" on one computer and use it to share files.



    I;ve never done it, so Ican't wlak you through it. But go into the Airport Setup Assistant or whatever it is called and it will have two options : join a wireless network or set up a software base station.



    You need Airport cards on both machines.



    It's easier to do it with an Ethernet crossover cable.

    I believe the TiBooks also have autosensing E-net ports, so you technically don't even need a crossover cable. A regular one should work just fine.

    but couldn't you send info. to each other w/out the crossover cable? just via the two airports?

    To transfer files between two computers via Airport in OSX, go to the Airport menu in the top right, and create a new network. Give it a name and a password and then have the other computer join that network (instead of whatever network they're on now). You then set up your file sharing via Airport in the network preferences and "Connect to.." the other computer.



    I think the process is pretty similar in OS9, and you can join a computer with OSX to a computer with 9 if that's your fancy. Oh, and it doesn't matter if you're a powerbook, ibook, powermac, imac or whatever as long as you've got an airport card.

    thanks ric! that was all i aws looking for!!! making sure that two macs can communicate with each other w/out a base station, and with airport cards installed........



    can you do this with multiple computers? or just two?

    RicRocket really helped me, too. Thanks I will be looking forward to stringing together (figuratively) a G4 cube an iMac G4 and a new PowerBook G4 800 when I get the latter; just cannot break the G3 Pismo Powerbook habit just yet... <img src="graemlins/embarrassed.gif" border="0" alt="[Embarrassed]" />
