I replaced the HDD on my rev D iMac

It was a bit of a production, but doable.

Is it a slot loading or tray loading optical drive?

Here's an excellent guide to upgrading the CRT iMacs, both tray and slot loading:

    MacWorld: Upgrade an iMac

    Hope this helps.

I was just going to suggest that guide. It's the one I used when I upgraded my family's iMac (slot loading) a couple months ago. It was all very clear except for finding out how to open the grill in part B. It's actually BENEATH the door you just swung open. Very confusing picture. Outside of that, it was a breeze. With CCC, my powerbook, and a firewire cable, I had a new drive with everything working 100% within 45 minutes and about 20 of that was just waiting for the files to be copies over. It was so stinking easy. I love being a mac user.
