Obviously not on this computer, but on a powerbook G3 I manage to get a DHCP address assigned and can ping another computer through the terminal, but no internet, automatic update, or mail.

The computer recently had a new backup battery put in and before that I'd always used airport (now no longer installed). I'm totally lost as to what the problem is.

you sure your DNS server is working?

try entering in an IP address instead of a web address for a site.

Ethernet into a wired/wireless d-link switch, connected to a cable modem. Other machines work fine both wireless and wired.

No DNS server specified on my other machines and they work fine.

I am able to connect to my router by it's ip address, but nothing else.

Try connecting to one of your other macs via their IP addresses (eg ping or ssh). If you can, the problem lies in your DNS. Try rebooting(?), try reconnecting later.

It sounds like your DNS is the culprit.

edit: Waitasec... do you have a [roper IP address? Maybe you aren't actually connected to the network (eg are plugged in but the router has not deemed to give you an IP address because of security settings you have set up.)

In some routers you can specify computers allowed to connect to the internet either by IP or by MAC. If your computer is not on the list it won't be able to get outside of local lan.

It's not just that ethernet line, as another computer will connect fine using the same cable, same slot in the router, same everything.

No DNS server is specified on the other computers that connect fine and neither has had its MAC address specially authorized by the wireless router.

    More wierd news-

I managed to use an old PMCIA wireless card to connect to the net with the same powerbook that wouldn't connect via ethernet.

    Very, very wierd.
