Thread Crashing
I've noticed a new phenomena. My threads are often closed, and rightfully so, because the level of personal attack gets out of hand. I'm beginning to think this is done intentionally by a group of posters, so that the thread will be locked and the (usually conservative) opinion will be repressed.
I'm not blaming the mods, who are only doing their jobs. I think locking the thread punishes the creator and participants who are not engaging in attacks more than the "perps". They should be warned, then suspended, and then banned. It's the same people every time.
Thoughts?

Perhaps stating something like this at the beginning, and having the moderators quote it when the thread is locked may point out the obvious technique that is being used, even more so.
"I'm too lazy to read the whole thread, but... "
and then they go on to post redundant, OT, or otherwise lockworthy comments
perhaps we could disable the reply button until people have actually read all the relevant posts
if you want to sit at the table, you've got to be willing to pay the ante.
if you expect others to be interested in your comments, pay the same respect.
it might not change the wisdom in your comments, but at least they'll be topical
if people can't be bothered to do the homework/read the article/follow the argument,
they shouldn't be surprised if the value of their opinion and level of sympathy they receive drop. this seems to trigger hurt feelings on the part of the lazy, who don't understand why the originators jump on them for not reading the obvious or answering their own questions.
perhaps ths wouldn't have much impact on those with confrontational motives,
but it might compel a little more continuity with subject, tone, and the actual discussion
just .02 worth as I sip coffee
