iBook 600 HD=slow click of death

Well...it's apparently time for a new drive for my wife's icebook. I've tried erasing the drive and installing the OS...but it will not boot after install. I've pretty convincded the drive is ****ed after she happened to drop it a few days ago. (ummm...yeah).

Quick question: I'm looking at several drives for a do-it-yourself install. Can I use pretty much any IDE 2.5" notebook drive? I'm looking at a few now, both used and new.

Thanks....

I think any IDE drive that will fit physically will do. Take a look here. Maybe it will help.

WRT the iBook HD, have you tried the firewire target mode to see if the disk still works? You will need another Mac with a 6-to-6 pin Firewire cable.

Definitely try the Firewire disk mode first, but if the hard drive is definitely hosed, you should be able to use basically any 2.5" laptop drive. All you have to do is make sure it's 9.5mm high. All new drives are 9.5mm, but some older ones are 12.5mm, and they won't fit in the iBook.

An excellent drive would be one of the 5400 RPM ones available, but they are quite expensive. Hitachi has good laptop drives.

Firewire target mode is for sissies.

While you're at it, you can upgrade her CD-ROM, too. Toshiba even makes a DVD-R/W (SD-R6012?) that fits. Of course, a G3 600MHz probably shouldn't be burning DVDs.

I installed a Toshiba SD-R2412 the last time I replaced the hard drive on my iBook. It's a pain. Be very meticulous. Here's a helpful link for iBook disassembly:

Did you try checking the SMART status of the drive? Go into HD/Applications/Utilities/Terminal. Type:

    Code:

    diskutil info disk0

Look for the line that says, SMART status. If it doesn't say "verified" after that, than you do indeed have a hardware problem. But if she did drop it...I'm guessing the drive may have gone south. Good luck!
