..she cant find "verify permissions" anywhere (i'm in a different state, so i cant get on her computer)

Has she gone into the "Disk Utility" to attempt a verify and repair of her permissions?
For the verify and repair, if she doesn't know how, just instruct her to go into her Application folder, open the Utilities folder and open up the Disk Utility application. It's pretty self-explanitory from there.
As for iTunes I wouldn't bother trying to troubleshoot it. Instead I would go for the fresh re-install. She can download the latest version of iTunes HERE
