iPod w/ PCI Firewire Cards

I've got a beige G3 running OS 9 and OS X. I was wondering if I can install a PCI Firewire card and use an iPod with it, because Apple says that the firewire port needs to be built in. Any ideas why?

    because some of the cards arent powered - so the ipod can't recharge, a powered card should do just fine.
