1. would ther be any reason to buy a powerbook right now? or should i try to wait until any updates come out? I have a 20" iMac i just bought but i want the portability. If i sell my iMac on ebay, i can recover most of my investment. i dont want to wait until the imac are updated and lose everything.

2. what do you think of refurbished powerbooks that apple is selling? If i was to get one of those, i could afford the 1Ghz 17" or the 1.25 15" with superdrive. those are what i really want.

Any advise would be greatly appreciated.

The refurbished Powerbooks on Apple's site are THE way to go. I am probably going there when I get my new one. Best way to save money. And go ahead and bite the bullett and get a new Powerbook now. You can't keep holding out and holding out. Even the base model iBook G4 represents 100 times what I have now in my Wallstreet G3 Powerbook. So no matter what you get, you're going to get something very powerful.

Hmmmm- I just purchased a refurb 15" 1.25 from apple's web site. I did this because my iBook ended up crapping out on me last week. I didn't want to get a new laptop because I wanted the power of a desktop (G5) with my iBook as a companion.

With my only laptop crapping out on me (and my only computer) I was sort of forced into getting a powerbook (I'm a media arts student so I need the extra screen real-estate and power of the powerbook if its my only computer).

I was a little disappointed that I had to get a laptop again (I wanted a dual G5), but I must say this computer is totally usable in a pro environment and I'm happy with it.

As far as already having a 20" iMac to use, I think I would have rather gone with a 17" iMac and maybe the iBook or 12" powerbook to accompany it. You should have thought about the portability factor before dropping the cash on the iMac. I know I can't live without a laptop (I move around too frequently) so I couldn't live with "just" a G5. I would have loved to have had a desktop and a laptop at the same time. But now that opportunity has passed and I probably won't get anything new for another 3 years...yeah...I had the first 500MHz version of the "icebook"...try living with that for 3 years!

So if you have the cash maybe try and sell the 20" get a 17" iMac and the 12" powerbook or 12" iBook. If you really don't have the cash- I'm not sure what I would do. A 20" screen is a nice thing, but so is a 15" powerbook.

What if you got the 12" powerbook and the 17" studio display?

well, i think i would do most of my work on the powerbook itself, and really not an extra monitor. I have a G5 at work, and I just dont use the extra real estate at home -- i rarely do work at home. I am a designer, so palettes and the ability to do work is important, but my resolution at work is actually less than it would be on the 15" powerbook. Go figure. Killer computer -- horrible monitor.

I think an extra monitor would be a purchase down the road for me. am i correct in saying that only the apple flat screens would work with the powerbooks and not any CRT monitors?

Nope- the powerbooks have DVI out- which will work with just about ANY thing you throw at them! It also comes with a DVI -> VGA adapter in the box so hooking it up to a CRT or even a projector is no problem.

The powerbook also has S-Video out and comes with an S-Video -> Composite video adapter in the box also...

So yes- anything you throw at it.
