800 G4 Tower should be way cheaper
In our studio, we may need to pick up a tower but I'm still shocked at how expensive it is.
The low end is $1600 U.S. Add a 15" Apple flat display for $600 and you're up to $2200.
Sure it's part of the "pro" line but the high end 800mhz G4 iMac is only $1900 and that's with a SuperDrive.
The tower isn't as cool looking. This should be priced more like $1300.

Of course I think all the towers need to drop in price, but then I'd be getting flamed up and down here...
It is pretty sick that you can't get a tower for less than that though.
There is a $200 mail in rebate on that model. Brings down the price to a more reasonable $1400

Can you imagine how many units would fly off the shelf if it were $1300 less another $200 rebate?

Why do you think you'll get flamed? It's the truth.
Anyway, I also think time has come for an upgrade and price reduction (back to the initial price) of the iMac. But I guess, that will likely happen along the introduction of new Power Macs.

I don't expect to see the iMac price back to the original one anytime soon.
What it really needs is to have the same architecture as the 933 and 1DP. I HATE when Apple is making design differences in the same category of products. Stuff like the 66/100Mhz and 100/133Mhz difference the ice and Ti had until recently. At least it isn´t the normal way for Apple and lets hope the difference is gone with the next PM update.

What is the architectural difference in the 800s?

no DDR L3 Cache
in fact no L3 cache at all

OK, so the CPUs in the 800s aren't configured with L3. That doesn't mean the 800s are architecturally different from the 933 and 2x1000 machines.

Lack of L3 cache really makes a big impact on performance in general

While this may be the case, it still doesnt' hint at an architectural difference. They're 7455s on 133 MHz SDR motherboards with the same exact chipset. The only difference is the CPU module, which happens to not have any L3 on it. If you were to put some SRAMs on it, it would work. The conclusion: the architecture is the same. That was my point, not that the performance impact was negligible.

well that was not Anders' point... he was reffering to the fact that the 800 Tower is INTENTIONALY "neutered" by apple to differentiate(sp?) it from the more expensive PMs... this is bullshit and should not be happening...
All of the current Powermacs are over priced and underpowered. Hopefully after MWNY only the former will be true.

I wouldn't get my hopes up.

Actually I'm hoping only the latter will be true..............

well if we get faster PMs then the current ones will come down in price so you could still get a cheap comp.... apple doesnt need to lower prices for you to get really cheap good hardware... if they put out a Dual G5 2GHz that smokes anything out there 10Xs over.... dont you think the current dual 1GHz G4s would come down in price?
