Major start up problem. Please HELP!

I have made a major mistake. I was installing a HP printer driver. The instructions said to temporarily remove all programs from the /library/start up items folder. Then restart. When I did, the computer would not restart. Obviously, I should not have removed the Apple programs in start up.

I cannot get into safe mode. I can not archive and reinstall because I have added updates (since I installed from my original CD). I do not want to erase and install and am looking for answers short of this drastic step.

I had moved the programs from the start up items folder into a folder called strt. Is there some way I can move those programs from the strt folder to the library/start up items folder via single-user mode? I can get to the single-user mode, but that is the only one I can use that I know of.

ANY suggestions would be appreicated.

Thanks.

    A few questions:

    1) What the heck did you have in there that prevented *BOOTING*?? /Library/Startup\\ Items is for *non-essential* things.

You didn't move them out of /System/Library/Startup Items, did you???

There are *ZERO* Apple items in /Library/Startup\\ Items by default, and Apple doesn't install them there. How the *CRUD* did you end up with things in there??

    Now...

    1) Questions go in Genius Bar

    2) Posting the same thing to several forums is against posting guidelines.

    3)

Get yourself into single-user mode. Follow the instructions above the prompt:

    /sbin/fsck -uf

    /sbin/mount / -uw

cd to whereever you put 'strt' If it's in your home folder, then 'cd ~/strt' without the quotes.

    mv * /Library/Startup\\ Items

    That puts everything back.

Assuming /Library/Startup\\ Items was where it actually was.

Just an update, I got the problem solved. Stupid me, should have thought of this sooner. I booted up with the OS 9 system that was also on my computer. I then moved the files back to where they should have been (systems/library/startup items. I then rebooted under OS X and presto. It worked!

Thanks for everyone's help and I again apologize for the guideline breach of mulitple postings in different forums. Please pardon my ignorance.
