iPod mini (Yes I have one) has gone crazy!

Yup, I've had a green beauty since February. Today it decided to go beserk. First I started hearing a lot of static on my phones while on my walk. Then when that went away (it wasn't the connection) the iPod made sharp audible static noises when I changed songs after pressing the forward button. This hadn't ever happened before. Then the drive started to speed up! The screen showed STARS and DOTS where the time/volume bar was. No kidding! I did a complete restore then reloaded my iTunes library back to the mini and it still behaved badly. Sooooo, I've requested a repair or replacement under warranty from Apple. They are sending a box to send it back to them. Stay tuned..........

You mean like the rating thing? I'll have a pic in a second.

Note: It's not exactly easy to scan in the iPod on the star screen because it keeps wanting to go back to the playing thing. Also I *DID* have my backlight on, but I guess the lamp on my scanner was too bright. Curses.

Now that static problem, that would be a problem though.

Yes! The rating thing. But I never saw that before. Nevertheless, the speed up of the drive and the static/distortion won't go away. Also the buttons aren't exactly working right all of a sudden. I used to be able to shut down the mini while playing a song. Now it simply won't turn off until and I go back to the main menu. I brought the mini back to the Apple store from whence I bought a few weeks ago complaining about the uber sensativity of the scroll wheel. They said skipping from one line to another even when my finger was off the wheel is "normal". Trying to zero in on a song title is hit and miss and very annoying. Demo units at the store didn't exhibit this behaviour.

One thing I'd say to try is resetting the iPod. Do this by holding down the menu and play buttons at the same time until the screen goes to the Apple logo. This *might* help.

Oh, and about the stars and dots. You get there by "double-clicking" the center button while a song is playing.

Default = scroll wheel adjusts volume

One click = scroll to position in song

Two clicks = adjust rating on current song.

In the last two, another click on the center button will exit from that mode and take you back to the standard song play with volume control.

You sure your headphone jack connector isn't going bad? http://ipodlounge.com/forums/showthr...?postid=160079

all your problems seem like they stemmed from you. without hearing the static, i cant answer that, but everything else could be completely your fault. if you have an AIFF file or any song over 20 minutes, the hard drive WILL spin all the time. i had a 4 minute song, but it was an AIFF, so the hard drive spun the whole time. the rating thing is obviously your finger hitting twice. problems (-1) solved.

Is it just me or does that whole post seem negative toward MacsRGood4U? I think it's probably true that the HD noise could easily be caused by that, and the static would be the headphones that are messed up, haha but phrases like 'completely your fault' just seem like they could be worded nicer. Maybe I'm wrong though

Greetings. Today I turned on my mini and the only sound output was total distortion. I tried several headphones. It could possibly be the headphone jack as suggested. I'm waiting to hear back from Apple. I do not have 20 minute AIFF files on the iPod if you're wondering. The sound sped up, without my touching the fast forward button, all by itself. I have done absolutely nothing wrong in this regards. The iPod has been working reasonably well, except for the damn over sensativity of the scroll wheel, since I got it. Now the buttons are not working properly. Total breakdown I'm afraid. It's not easy being green.

Well good, luck, hopefully they can fix everything for you. Sometimes it's hard to select just a single thing on the iPod, but never that much trouble, and the sound shouldn't be distorted.

ipodandimac, I didn't mean you were trying to sound mean, and in all likeliness nobody else thought that but me.

Slashdot.org is now reporting this problem cropping up with the mini speculates that it may be the reason mini's are in short supply. Has to do with phone jack solder. Story is here.

I wasn't really insulted by ipodmanic's post. With a name that includes "maniac" how could I be?

UPDATE: TechTV ran a screen crawl on the subject late Monday during one of their programs. Said, "no reponse from Apple" when they asked them about the problem as reported at iPodlounge.com.

According to Cnet and Reuters reports, Apple is aware of the problem. According to one poster at iPodlounge, the design of the earphone jack/board assembly may be at fault. I do have a theory as to why it may be happening. Since I've had the mini, I've probably put it on my belt about 90 times (and removed it the same amount) using the Apple supplied belt clip. In order to use it one must press against the spring based clip to open it to slide onto the belt. To do this pressure is made with the thumb against the clip to open it while the index and middle fingers press against the front of the iPod just above the screen. (The same process is used to remove the iPod from the belt.) That's the area where the jack is. This pressure seems to have dislodged or done damage to the insides of the mini.

I received a return box from Apple this morning and my mini is en route back to them for repair (or most likely replacement).
