Please read this . . . the entire thing: article

This is a memo leaked that shows how deeply screwed up the situation is in iraq.

I am posting this becuase it is scarry. I want it to work out, I want to be proved wrong about Bush but the extent of screwed-upness that this memo reveals is terrifying.

[EDIT: maybe 'cover up' aren't the right words]

Nothing wrong in Iraq that can't be countered by repeating a few tried-and-true aphorisms about commitment and freedom.

Repeat after me: "We removed a brutal dictator from power. We're a freedom-loving people and we're committed to a free Iraq for all Iraqis."

Now, keep repeating this, don't dig any deeper (the mainstream press doesn't think that's necessary, so why should you?), and everything will be okay.

Well, at least okay enough to hold out until November. After that, who the hell cares?

polls show that Bush has taken the lead precisely because of the Iraq issue . . . .

You guys are wishing too much for conservatives to turn against GWB. Party loyalty is more important than dropping support and I don't think anything done in Iraq or on the War on Terror from now until November will turn conservatives against GWB.

There could be 1000 casualties from now until the election, and GWB's base support will stay in the 40% to 43% range. Nothing is going to change that. It is sort of the nature of the beast, especially in today's conservative demographics.

A significant proportion of the population enjoy war. As long as there are lots of "terrorists" being blown up, it probably will not matter that U.S. servicemen are being killed, and that civilians also get caught in it. Despite all the outcry against Vietnam, Nixon was elected on a war platform during the "radical" 1960s. A sizable number of Americans like and support the flexing of U.S. military muscle for its own sake. Sad, but that is the truth of it. It is somewhat self-limiting behaviour, however, as long-term wars are really expensive...and the U.S. already has a bit of a budget problem

Why is Party loyalty so important? (from someone who holds no allegiance to any 'party')

Because we are social animals? Because it keeps the party strong? Because it keeps the party in power?

How would you explain the support for GWB amongst conservatives? GWB hasn't exactly been an exemplar of conservative ideology, yet the 40% base support is still there. The great majority of people simply don't go in and analyze a politician's performance and vote their conscience. They always have the ideology they favor in mind when voting and will vote for the ideology even though the politician doesn't follow it.

Just look at the ballot for instance. Why is there a vote all Republican or Democrat check box there?
