System very slow

All of a sudden my 17" PB (1.33/512MB) is barely responsive. Things take forever to load and even moving around inside an application causes the "beach ball". It took over a minute just to switch from the Subject to the Message field of this post. I can't even cut and paste between applications... but here's the top portion of the "top" command (I had to manually retype it in this window):

Processes: 47 total, 2 running, 45 sleeping... 119 threads

Load Avg: 0.92, 0.70, 0.52 CPU Usage: 28.7% user, 13.7% system, 57.8% idle

SharedLibs: num = 119, resident - 29.2M code, 3.19M dada, 9.87M LinkEdit

MemRegions: num = 8550, resident = 74.0M + 6.11M private, 68.1M shared

PhysMem: 70.8M wired, 153M active, 195M inactive, 419M used, 92.4M free

VM: 3.22G + 81.8 M 762389(0) pageins, 728752(0) pageouts

Some of the numbers may be slightly off since they were updating while I was typing. The VM 3.22G entry bothers me but I'm not sure what that is. Anybody know what could be going on here???

I don't really understand the "top" stuff that much, and I don't want to sound like a fool... but have you tried rebooting? Sometimes that can clear out old stuff (I don't know what exactly) and it can help the system to be a bit more responsive. Just my 2c. \

Some thread or process (or application) seems to have gone mad. VM is "Virtual memory", i.e. your system was busy swapping data from RAM to VM and back like crazy...

EDIT: And yes, Mac+ was right, rebooting should help

Update your prebinding too. Info and how to can be found here. There are other helpful maintenance tips on that site too. Good luck.
