"Internal Harddrive Error"

I have a friend with an iBook (not sure exactly what model, she bought it last year). She's running Jaguar. A couple days ago she told me it was making funny noises and this morning it apparantly went kapput. She called Apple Tech Support, and she told me they told her that it sounded like an internal hard drive error. What if anything can I do to try to back things up from the drive? OR should we just get it to the nearest Apple Store (thankfully only about 10 minutes away), stat?

It sounds strange but I would let it sit for 2 days. Sometimes the drive will decide to work long enough to backup/copy important files. If it does work, move FAST! It can crash again at any second. A more expensive option is to do a data recovery and let someone else play with it.
