iPod -> Dock + Play button = ?

So, I got back from the gym, and hooked my iPod (40g) into it's little dock to charge it up. While doing so, I accidently had my thumb on the play button. Now it's giving me a screen with a rotating disk, a magnifying glass, and a long empty bar at the bottom.

What is it doing, and how do I get it to stop? I've tried pressing all the buttons, but nothing has happened. Oh, and even though it's in the dock, it isn't being recognized by my computer, so I can't eject it. Can I just take it out of the dock, or will that damage some of the memory? I've got some stuff backed up on there that I don't want to lose, so I don't want to risk doing that.

Thanks for any insight you can offer!

    it's doing a search of the hard drive. this occasionally happens to me too. when you see that image, hold dow the play and menu buttons to reset the ipod. you'll hear the dock make its noise, and everything should sync as usual.
