How to make your PowerBook into a wireless router?

How do you configure your PowerBook to broadcast a signal for other wireless computers? Is there a disadvantage to doing this, besides eating bandwidth?

You can't do it wireless-to-wireless, but you can act as a base-station if you have a wired connection. It'll have pretty poor range, but it works.

Go to System Preferences -> Sharing -> Internet

and tell it to share your connection from Ethernet to Airport.

Sure you can. When you have a wireless connection, it'll include Airport as a sharing option. And the range isn't bad. My family has an iMac as a software basestation and they get nearly as good coverage as I do with my hardware basestation.

n.b. I don't know why you'd want to share from airport to airport, but it would work. I guess if only one of the computers was authorized on the access point, you could share the access. Hmm...

Hmmm. That is an interesting idea. Does that mean I could use one of my laptops as a repeater to reach farther to another laptop? Cool.

    Wow!

I've never considered that the wireless cards can be used without a separate base station...

If I get the Powerbook shortly, I might put a wireless card in my desktop and share the connection. Doesn't matter if the range sucks, my home is very small. Base station is too expensive, at least Apple's.

Personally i would get cheap 802.11g wireless router, if you share connection on your desktop, it always has to be turned on. Range is not that good (as you've said).

don't buy Apple BS, they are nice, and easy to configure, but others have usually better range, and extra features..
