WASHINGTON -- The chief of the Selective Service System has proposed registering women for the military draft and requiring that young Americans regularly inform the government about whether they have training in niche specialties needed in the armed services.

The proposal, which the agency's acting Director Lewis Brodsky presented to senior Pentagon officials just before the U.S.-led invasion of Iraq, also seeks to extend the age of draft registration to 34 years old, up from 25.

I'm glad to see this happening. It is silly to claim women are the equal of men and are capable of serving as well, but then not have them register for the draft like men. More true equality like this is what we need.

Agreed, excluding women does not seem justifiable. Also, as a male you have an extra hoop to jump through to qualify for educational financing. You must provide proof you have registered for the draft, and since awards are often first-come-first-serve, it can add delays to the process.

on the surface, I would agree, but the women that would fall into this aren't the fring nutty kook womens rights types, it is 35-40 years too late to draft the people who asked for it, do we want 60 year old women in the uniform?

I dont think it is right to punish girls of today for actions of their ignorant hippy parents, this is just like slave reporations, why should we pay for the mistakes of our ansestors?

    on a lighter note:

I say clone angelina jolie, or trinity from the matrix

To tell you the truth, I don't really care. In fact, I kinda like having the draft men-only so I can use it as a point when I'm making fun of feminazi types. Plus, I wouldn't mind if the military were men only anyway. As it is now, women have a far lower bar to go over in terms of military fitness. Far lower. So in the end, there will never likely be true equality.

And I think that's fine. Men and women are different. Men will never have to have babies. Women will never be as fast, never be as strong, and never be as good at chess. Men can use the extra time, speed, strength, and chess playing ability to their benefit in the military.

I'm all for every 18-year-old, male and female, having to do national service of some sort. If the national service is military, that would be fine too.

But right now in my school district, many women are being penalized for having taken off time from teaching to have children. The district is eliminating medical insurance for retirees in 12 months. A lot of the female teachers are going to lose out on this medical insurance because the time they took out to have a couple of kids has put off the time when they are eligible to retire. So though they are old enough, they are a few years shy of the points needed wrt time teaching.

But none of the male teachers - the fathers - have this problem. Many, many mothers will now retire without medical insurance...solely because they bore children and took time out to care for them as babies.

Is that fair? It's happening at this very minute in my school district. Those teachers have taught for decades, but will miss retirement medical benefits by one year. They feel as if they have been slapped in the face.

This is all caused by several things: the downturn of the economy for three years after 9/11 (thank you Osama ), and Bush's "No Child Left Behind" policy that is bankrupting the schools to pay for the deluge of non-English-speaking illegals.
