Noise Canceling Headphones

I have a pair of in-ear Sony headphones that I use with my iPod. Normally that work fine; however, they are less than ideal when on an airplane.

Do noise canceling headphones actually work as advertised?

The two noise canceling headphones that seem to get the most mention are the super expensive Bose and the more moderately priced Sony MDR-NC-20. Has anyone had experience with either of these? If so I?d be interested in your feelings about them.

Thanks in advance.

The Bose headphones are great, but expensive and bulky. I've had two pairs of the Sony in ear noise canceling bud and loved them. In the end I found that the bud part was too fragile because I broke the headphones twice. Also dealing with the little box can be a pain in the ass for regular use, but fine for air travel.

In the end I decided that it was unwise to walk around NYC without being able to hear cars, bike messengers, and pedestrians. Got myself a pair of Brooklyn made Grado Labs SR-60's.

These don't work very well at all (as is to be assumed I guess) and not only that, but don't give off very good sound quality. (I bought them when they just came out and were like $80...featured in MacWorld mag)

I'd say just save up and grab the bose ones. I think that is what I'm going to do. I would like to test them first though, see how good the quality of sound is, and see how quiet they actually make it. For $200 or whatever they are, I'm expecting complete silence.

I'm not sure that I don't like being able to hear if I'm on a bus or something. I only want noise cancelled when I'm in my room or mowing. Until I get the bose ones, I think I am just going to keep using my Sony mDR-V600...they don't cancel sound, but they dampen it a lot (I guess most headphones do) and they sound really good.

Maybe I don't go with Bose and keep saving for E5's...they are in ear that can be made to fit your ear perfectly and so it dampens sound a lot, and I don't think you will find more precise sound then they offer.
