iMac G4 microphone

I've asked this question before and never received a reply, but I'll ask it again in the hope that somebody out there might know the answer.

How do you get the microphone on the iMac G4 to work?

I've never been able to get mine to work, and I'm hoping that I'm simply missing something. If I open up the Sound preferences pane in Panther, and select the microphone, and speak (or make any noise) nothing registers. Is there some other setting, or is the microphone in my iMac screwed?

    Mmm?

I think I might have a dud on my hands. Now I'll have to take it back to the dealer so that they can break/scratch it all. I believe fixing the microphone means taking the screen apart?

Yeah, I'd say you have a dud. Hope you got AppleCare. And there is no reason why repairs should do cosmetic damage to your computer. Absolutely no excuse for that, if there are damages (beyond what is reasonable) get a refund on the repair, either that or just don't use that shop anymore. Take it to an Apple Store if possible, especially if you still have AppleCare on the thing.
