well, chalk this up to my "there HAS to be a way" mentality, but i have not seen this mentioned anywhere else.

i am not a big fan of the panther sidebar. even at the truncated "icon only with tooltips" mode, i felt like it was kludged on and i got used to the old jaguar way of everything in the toolbar.

well, double-clicking on the slider widget closes the sidebar, BUT you lose access to any aliases in there. and dragging directories and apps into the toolbar get ignored.

BUT

go to "View>Customize Toolbar..." to get the customize toolbar sheet. WHILE THE SHEET IS ACTIVE, drag folders and apps into the toolbar at the top of the window (do NOT, however, drag sidebar items from another finder window, as these are technically just aliases and will be ignored). this works for folders, disks, apps, even servers (though when they are offline, you get the "question mark" until they come online), but it ONLY works when the Customize Toolbar" sheet is down and active.

Voila! Jaguar functionality in a panther window. and the sidebar is still there if you REALLY want it. unfortunately, for those wanting a non-metal face on their finder window, i haven't stumbled on anything yet other than hacking away or guikits or something.

anyway, if this has been mentioned elsewhere, my apologies, but i haven't seen it.

I first started using Macs on Jag and totally hated it's finder without a sidebar.

God bless panther and it's wonderful sidebar

You will never take it from me alive

    cool trick...

does it work with the trash? I'd much rather have the trash in the toolbar rather then the sidebar....

FYI, you don't actually have to open the Customize Toolbar sheet. If you drag a folder to the toolbar, and let it hover for a few seconds, the little plus sign will appear, and you can drag like normal.
