Still sitting on the fence

in Current Mac Hardware edited January 2014
This is my first post in this forum. I've never owned a mac and have no experience using one or even seeing os x in action other than the quicktime vids at the apple site. I'm a disheartened windows user who (or is it whom?) is seriously considering a powermacG4 but I have many hardware questions several of which I'll list here.

1. In the unlikely event os x freezes would I be able to reset from the cpu or tower without performing a hard reboot? I think I read a pin or pen tip is needed to reset the G3 systems.

2. Will modifying the cpu void the warranty? Some companies, dell for example, allow user upgrades leaving the warranty intact. However, only components bought with the system remain under warranty.

3. I'm an avid gamer. Is the apple pro mouse suitable for gaming?

4. How is the quality of the apple pro speakers?

5. What are the dimensions of the G4?

I'm a stickler for product cohesiveness. If I could I'd buy an apple monitor, mouse and speakers with my powermac keeping everything apple. Even if the mouse didn't satisfy me I'd continue to use it because its an apple product. Strange, huh? Stupid too I guess. Oh well. Thats the way I'd rather do things but my funds are limited at the moment. Macworld is approaching fast so I'll wait to see what new products and improvements will be offered before a final decision is made. Any info will be greatly appreciated. Thanx

Ha Ha Ha, maybe this time i'll get my post in before the others.

    here goes.

yeah, you can just hold down the power key for 5 seconds, like a normal ATX case and it will shut off. This has worked for the only kernal panic i've had.

    2. [quote]2. Will modifying the cpu void the warranty? Some companies, dell for example, allow user upgrades leaving the warranty intact. However, only components bought with the system remain under warranty. <hr></blockquote>

if you buy the system then upgrade the CPU later you will void your warrenty. if you overclock it voids the warrenty, although i think that goes across the board. pretty much any retail machine where you're swapping out the CPU and replacing it will void your warrenty. (i'd have to see this Dell policy to believe it. people are just too dangerous thumbing around inside their machines)

no. get a real mouse with two buttons and a scroll wheel. lots of nice options available. (including microsoft's mice. )

    4. [quote]How is the quality of the apple pro speakers? <hr></blockquote>

fine, but gets bad at loud volumes, unless you have an iSub. adding the sub makes them wonderful, otherwise loud bass distorts them.

    now you're just being lazy. <img src="graemlins/lol.gif" border="0" alt="[Laughing]" /> try looking at <a href="http://www.apple.com/powermac/specs.html"; target="_blank">apple's website</a>.

Alcimedes, thanx for the help. Since I started this thread I've decided to go with an imac. Thinksecret has listed 17" imacs to be revealed at macworld. Sweet! I should buy the isub with the speakers. The isub is usb, and if I'm correct, the speakers plug directly into the audio jack in the rear of the imac. I'm guessing for the two items to work together the speakers will connect somehow to the isub first which then connects to the imac. I may stick with the apple pro mouse anyway. I have two game consoles to satisfy any fragging/blasting/destructive urges I will have. I'm excited about using a mac. Thanx again.

not a problem, hope you find something you like.

don't know about the iSub, never bought one for myself, i have an iBook so i don't really use speakers, just headphones.

a 17" iMac would be nice. i'm waiting to see what comes out monday before i purchase computers for my lab.

I have the iSub with SoundSticks combo. It's like $170, and there are probably speakers with much more watts for the money, but the SoundSticks sound GREAT to a high volume and look cool too. Highly recommended.
