iMac HardDrive/Memory Questions :

Greetings!

is the hard drive in the lcd iMac replaceable?

also, is there only ONE slot the end-user has access to, for adding ram? The other invisible slot is pre-installed by the manufacturer? Does that mean the maximum ram is 768? since 256 is the max from apple, and 512 is the max of any ram? specs. on the ram from apple? [nanoseconds, cl/ras/cas]

thanks!!!

You can have up to 1 gig of Ram in the new LCD iMacs. As far as it goes for upgrading the HD if you want to open the case I am sure it is possible but you would probably be safer just buying an external firewire hard drive.

how do you install 512 on the inside? since the factory only comes with 128 or 256? [memory]

[hard disk] : how would you open it to replace the HD?

Pretty much when you first purchase your Mac you have to say hey I want this much ram if you buy from the Apple store they will allow you to upgrade to a point, but not as much as if you went to the Apple Store Online.

As far as opening up the new iMac and adding a new HD I am not sure because I don't own one. Do a search on <a href="http://www.google.com/mac"; target="_blank">http://www.google.com/mac</a>; for upgrading imacs I am sure you will find sites with people that have modified their iMac.

    i took one apart.

    here's a <a href="http://www.alcimedes.com/iMac_guts.jpg"; target="_blank">pic</a>.

the HD is harder to get access too. the RAM slot is in the lower left.

NOTE: DO NOT TAKE THIS MACHINE APART WITHOUT READING THE .PDF ON HOW TO DO IT FIRST!!!!

you will at minimum cause constant kernal panics if you do it wrong, and have a good chance of cooking your CPU.
