BEWARE: Office 2004 Bugs Abundance

After a few days of use, I can affirm that this should not have been released. It has more bugs than my Florida back-yard in mid-July.

Entourage crashes (on several machines) when trying to change fonts in the Signature or E-mail windows.

Sync with Palm will not work. Attempts to open the provided Entourage Conduit Settings in the Hotsync Manager create an immediate crash of Hotsync.

Will not open attachments in Entourage consistently: Crashes or freezes Excel on open.

Drops IMAP mailbox passwords FREQUENTLY for no reason. Apple's Mail (simultaneous connection on another machine) has no such issues.

On and on and on...

I recommend saving your money until a patch/update is released.

Danke. I was wondering why there was a $20 rebate before the thing has even been on shelves for a week. While there are apparently some speed improvements, it doesn't much matter if there are stability un-improvements.

I don't know about any massive bugs in Word, but even the small things are annoying. There is a customize formatting palette option, and in that there is a slider for adjusting the transparency level of the Formatting Palette when it is inactive. next to the slider there is a text field for manual numeric entry. If you type in "50", the field actually only shows 0. The only way to enter a double digit number is to enter the first digit, hit the right arrow on you keyboard and then type in the second digit.

I haven't had enough time to really get into the meat of it but even just that small thing shows that there still needs a bit of spit and polish.

If historical precedents in that area are any indication, we won't be seeing "Service Release 1" for six months or more.

That's funny--I've been running a pre-release beta w/o any issues for over a month now, with heavy Entourage and Word use.

    PLEASE answer these Entourage questions:

Does it work well with Exchange Server? Please expand on any comments!

    Does it support .pst files?

Does it work at all? :0)

It works well with our Exchange server (Exchange 2000). Public folders have some support but support for public contacts and calendars is still missing. No GAL browsing but the directory service now shows info beyond basic LDAP. I've even tested (extensively) delegate support. And even though it's rough, it worked, even calendaring.

    PST files? I wish.

I just picked up the Parent teacher version last night. Installed it and then tried to connect via VPN to my office exchange server. (This was previously done with no issues in OfficeX) well it will not connect and down load my folders. I close it and open the previous version of Entourage and it connects no problem. I have corrected permissions etc... No resolution. Do I need to connect to the work network directly one time before I can connect via VPN?

I have just received my copy. I just cannot fathom how they can spend nigh on 3 years getting this release out, with so little 'value'. And the bugs. And the lack of basic fixes (I cite entourage totally ignoring the option-delete Mac OS X standardised short cut for deleting a whole word).

I am about ready to give up submitting that bug (it would be like the 200th time, or so it feels like)

As a follow up to the previous reply to your question. Exchange support has seen only small improvements over X; my company STILL runs a 5.5 server and I can only connect via IMAP, with no access to GAL, Calendar etc. There is NO .pst support

Given the strength of iSync (with .Mac) making my contacts/calendar available to all of my Macs, I plan on sticking with Apple's apps as my primary business tools. Hopefully Tiger brings a few new features that will keep Mail/AB/iCal ahead of Entourage.

Just in case MS's Exchange solutions for Mac users is detailed here http://www.microsoft.com/mac/support.aspx?pid=exchange

Also for all those people still running Exchange 5.5 note that it is now in its extended support period http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=fh;[ln];LifeSrvr
