    This deal is legit.

I'm currently a summer student at LA, and I saw the deal while walking through the union yesterday. Since I'm in the market for a new mac, but felt the PB's were too expensive, this caused my eyes to nearly bug out of my head. I spoke to the guy for a bit, he said that since they order in huge quantities, they can get an occasional price break...and since it's a student union, and they're not trying to gouge us, they sell it at that same price break. The Books are the latest ones, 133 bus, updated graphics, et al...the deal is open only to UCLA students/faculty...I don't think this is indicative of Apple changing the Books, because there's no good reason that the price drop would then effect only UCLA students. Further, the guy told me that it's not a promotion...this price lasts until their current inventory (about 75 of each as of yesterday) runs out. I'm not a regular studetn, so we'll see if I can take advantage of the deal...I was thinking of waiting till after the keynote to try, but do you think there's a chance that this'll expire come the keynote and my guy was misinformed?

Anyway, I'm going to see if I can get one...I'm going to go for the lower model, for those of you who have TiBooks, this is my first laptop, do you recommend it?

At those prices, definitely. Maybe you should check on their return policy just in case. Buy it, don't open it until after the expo and take it back if something better comes along. Just make sure not to open it.

Well even if something better is released after the keynote, i don't see the 75 machines the ucla guy has going anywhere. If anything they will become even cheaper after the keynote (if something new comes out). Also if new PBs come out, they won't be marked down and you said that the current price points were too high. It seems to me that this deal will be your best and probably your only choice regardless of what is released on wednesday.

ezra: Hell yeah, I recommend Powerbooks! Those models are pimped, nice screen (1280x960), 32 MB VRAM

Ati Radeon 7500s, etc etc. Go for it, or spend the next four years kicking yourself!
