10.0.4, man. Wow... how far we have come in a few years. Using 10.0 is a lot like using OS 9 now. I have to use Internet Explorer, I have to deal with all sorts of interface kludges I'm not used to, I have to put up with strange bugs and inexplicable slowdowns.

Anyway, I got this because just today, I upgraded my Gigabit Ethernet G4 to a Quicksilver. An acquaintance of mine was selling his Quicksilver locally for really cheap... about $500. It's a low end model, but that's a nice price anyway. I've moved my processor upgrade, hard drives, RAM, and DVD burner into it. As part of the process, I checked out his OS 9 and OS X installations.

So he has 10.0.4 installed. It's pretty funny. My G4 upgrade card works fine but is reported as a G3. The things in the dock are IE 5.1.1 *Preview* (funny that old IE for OS X was really new back then), MSN Messenger 2.1, iTunes 1.1.1, TextEdit and System Prefs of course, Grab (note that you can't take screenshots with command-shift-3 in 10.0), the Applications folder, and "docklings" for Displays and iTunes. Yeah, you couldn't put controls for volume, displays, etc in the menu bar. I think you were stuck with the menu bar clock and those docklings. Oh yeah, and check out the funky-ugly drop shadow for the dock label.

I tried running one of the docklings in 10.3.3. It froze the dock. Kinda funny. Most of those old apps don't even open in 10.3, but some of them do. It's funny, things like iTunes have improved so much that using the old version is kind of like using those old Windows lookalike music apps.

Actually, it's fairly fast. Now, I'd expect it to be fairly fast since I have a 1.33 GHz processor, but still... in many ways it's really no slower than 10.3. I've just been upgrading my hardware since then, so I give the OS updates more credit than they're due.

By the way, the music in that iTunes window is NOT mine. He left his stuff there. Just wanted to dissociate myself from that

I remember how horrible internet connect was. I also remember how my "supported" iMac was not "supported".

    Wow...I've almost forgotten those days.

What a beautiful, amazing and ongoing work in progress. I remember, when Jaguar came out, "okay, NOW we got us an OS, boys!" and that's when I took the plunge to X full-time, and haven't looked back.

Then Panther was even a massive step up from that.

So I can't WAIT for Tiger!

Screw Longhorn and everything it represents.

They'll always be also-rans and "me too" wannabes. You guys realize that we currently have an OS that others couldn't begin to even approach for another 2-4 years?

wait, you ran OS X on 64 MB of RAM? wow, my dad did that once, cuz the computer company messed up, only gave him 64 MB, when he already had 512, anyways, wow, that was slower than death!

Man, did I forget that the Apple "menu" used to be a centered icon, and nothing more in OS X DP. Can't remember if it was changed into a menu for OS 10.0 or not though
