Japanese Apps appear garbled
I login/use my G5 (OSX 10.3.3) in English.
My wife logs in/uses my G5 in Japanese.
At this point, there are no problems...
Even with my environment set to English, I can still view Japanese websites, read/write Japanese email/word docs, etc... no problem...
The problem starts when I open an application that is only in Japanese (no English version of the software
). The menu items, window text and buttons are all garbled text
\ When my wife opens the app (logged in using Japanese), every thing works fine
I've seen a similar problem with a Konfabulator widget that was only Japanese (local Japan TV guide). I'm using Keitai Sync Plus (cellphone/PC sync software) that is only localized into Japanese (no English version), and I can use it fine (menus/buttons/etc... all show up in Japanese fine).
Is there a preference setting (edit a pref file manually?) somewhere that will allow native Japanese applications to still show up correctly while logged in to an English environment?
A temporary fix I've found was while logged on in English, if I changed the language settings in the System Preferences to Japanese, then open the app (with out loging out) the app works fine. After I finish using the app, I just changed the language settings back to English (with out logging out).
I'm using ADVC Controller by a Japanese company called Yano.
I bought the ADVC-200TV at the Apple Store here in Ginza. The software was bundled with the hardware, so it's "supposed" to work. Actually, the only problem is the English/Japanese localization, other than that, the software/hardware works great in Japanese!
I'd recommend it to anyone (who can read Japanese!

Regarding your situation, the problem is within the software itself. I don't think that there is any setting in OS that will change the language preference for only the apps.
I run a few Japanese apps including Appleworks J in my English Panther with no problems. The Japanese menus show up properly. So it must be a problem with how Yano programmed your controller software. You probably need to contact them if you want to find a hack for it but I doubt that they will provide you with the info.
It seems that you are fluent enough to be able to read Japanese. If the apps are critical to you, it might be best to switch your OS language settings to Japanese. I assume that you already know how. If not, let me know.
Ya, I can read/write Japanese no problem... It's just a pain in the butt to run into problems like this. I was hoping that I could tweak a pref file to look at a specific font instead of the current system local font...
Feel free to contact me if you want.
