How difficult would it be to transfer some dv clips to my Powerbook HD from my External HD so that I could work on some editing? then once I'm done I'd transfer those files back to the external drive to clear up some space on my Powerbook?

Easy.
1. Copy the files to a folder on your Powerbook hard drive.
2. Unhook your FW drive
3. Open up the project and when it asks where the files are, reconnect them to the files on your Powerbook.
If you make any new renders or add any footage on the road, you will need to add that footage back to your FW drive when you are done.
