i have noticed that the prices in my home country (new zealand) seam to be more than they should be taking into account current exchange rates and shipping and tax.

i want to start a comparison of prices around the world. prices converted to us dollers, including any tax (please state tax amount)

to start it off:

new zealand, tax: gst =12.5%

prices are inclusive of tax

top of the line g4 (non bto) 4497$us

emac cdrw 1771$us

low end imac 2140$us

how does your country price these models?

I can't comment on New Zealand too much but Australia and Europe will likely see lower prices as stock clears (ie a new model is introduced) due to their strengthening currencies.

I know the new 10GB iPods are already cheaper than the 5GB were a couple days ago so as more stock clears there should be more price drops to compensate for stronger currencies vs the US dollar.

The euro-zone prices are all the same, VAT excl. Differences come along with different VAT rates. And the VAT-excl. price is based on a 1$ for 1,1 euro exchange rate for new products since yesterday.

Yep, Apple has started shafting Canadians too. They used to do a straighter conversion but now that the Canadian dollar has started to recover, their prices have not changed to reflect that. It's only a couple of cents but that translates to the iMac costing 100-120 more than it should.

Though nobody seems to get it in a$$ like the brits, whom Apple seems to think are using pesos.

I know I should be comparing the same models for clarity, but... I was just looking at three models on the Apple sites for Switzerland and US.

The new 17" iMac is $1999/CHF 3499 ($2432), so that's about a 22% difference. Of course, the CH prices include TVA, and the US prices don't, since it depends on which State you are buying in.

The price gap for the dual 1G PowerMac was about 28%:CHF 5499 ($3821) vs $2999 in US.

The 800G PowerBook had a gap of about 30%: CHF 5999 ($4169) vs. $3199 in US.

The new iMac 17 in Japan is ¥249,800. Now, the US dollar is tumbling, ¥114=$1 today versus ¥126 when I last cashed TCs in Tokyo in June, so the $2191.23 today would have been $1982.54 at three weeks ago exchange rates. Wonder what that is in euros?

Actually, I practically collapsed the other day when I heard one analyst announce that the Euro had risen against the dollar, reflecting greater confidence in the STARRY RING. Brother, I think rather parity or worse dollar to euro is clearly an indicator of the dollar's weakness in the current market. BUT WHAT DO I KNOW, I'M A RENTER IN MANHATTAN

So what is the average income in US dollars for each? The answer to that is massively improtant.

Apple Australia actually did a good thing this time around, since the introduction of the fp iMac the exchange rate has gone like 12%ish in OZ favour but they never dropped the prices till MWNY.. the 17" iMac is the same price as the top 15" was, the sd 15" went down $500.00.. The other models also copped a price drop. But as I say for the last 6 months we were getting ripped by this "no pass on of exchange rate currency variations", so it may have finally evened out a bit...

Now if there was only a 1ghz 17" iMac they would have my cash...

In France the 20 GB iPod cost 649 Euros (654 $)

VAT is 19,6 % but even with the VAT the price for France should be 600 Euros .. :-(

    1 Euro = 1,01 $

Quick Question: I'm considering purchasing a new iMac for several reasons. One of which is I'd like to use it

to transfer video from my Sony Camcorder to DVD. My Sony camcorder uses Digital 8mm tapes. I'd like to

burn copies onto DVDs. I know I can do this with the Fire Wire connection. My question is: How much video

can I fit onto each DVD? One apple.com page states that a person can fit "up to 22 minutes of digital

video" onto each DVD. Another apple.com site states that one can fit "up to 90 minutes of high quality

video" onto each DVD. Are these both correct? And if so, what is meant by "high quality video"?

I am getting the impression that current DVD-writing technology is just "single-layered" or something like

that and that in the future, it will be "multi-layered" enabling much more video to be placed onto each DVD.

Is that correct? And if so, what is the guestimate on the ETA of that technology?

Something to remember with currency changes and prices is that Apple's prices aren't a dynamic system. They decide it based on a certain point in time when the currency is a certain price. As new stock becomes available and the old stuff has cleared the prices adjust if a significant enough and stable enough change has occurred.
